Fulshear residents gathered Saturday to celebrate International Yoga Day, three days ahead of the official June 21 observance, in a community event centered on unity, health, and well-being.
International Yoga Day was established by the United Nations in 2014 to highlight the global significance of yoga, an ancient Indian practice known for promoting physical and mental wellness. Recognizing its holistic benefits, the UN designated June 21 as a day to integrate yoga into public health initiatives worldwide.
Event organizer Pradeep Sharma emphasized yoga’s relevance in today’s high-stress, fast-paced society.
“Yoga brings physical and mental benefits,” Sharma said. “The world is suffering from loneliness and stress, and yoga definitely helps with that.”
Fulshear Mayor Don McCoy addressed the gathering, spotlighting this year’s theme, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” as dozens participated in group yoga sessions under the Texas sun.
“In our ever-connected world, yoga stands as a beautiful reminder of harmony between mind, body, and planet,” McCoy said. “What better place to celebrate that than here in our growing, vibrant city?”
A Day of Multiple Observances
Saturday’s yoga event coincided with several other national and international celebrations, including National Flag Day, the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday, World Blood Donor Day, and International Bath Day.
McCoy used the moment to reflect on national pride and shared values, telling attendees, “We are united under the red, white and blue — an emblem of freedom, resilience, and shared purpose.”
He also paid tribute to military service members during the Army birthday recognition, thanking soldiers “past and present” for their “service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to our country.”
The event offered a unique blend of mindfulness, patriotism, and community spirit — an early but timely reminder of the power of unity through wellness.
