A good hot yoga mat should provide excellent grip, durability, and be able to withstand the moisture and heat without becoming slippery or deteriorating quickly. In this article, we will explore the various factors to consider when selecting the best yoga mat for hot yoga and review some of the top options available in the market.

Grip and Traction

One of the most crucial aspects of a hot yoga mat is its grip. When you are sweating profusely during a hot yoga session, you need a mat that will keep you firmly in place during different poses. Mats with a textured surface or made from materials that enhance grip are ideal. For example, natural rubber mats often have a good grip, even when wet. Some mats also have a patterned or embossed surface that helps to increase traction. A mat with a non-slip bottom layer is also essential to prevent it from sliding on the studio floor. This is especially important in a hot yoga class where you may be moving quickly from one pose to another.

Material

Natural Rubber

Natural rubber mats are a popular choice for hot yoga. They are biodegradable and offer excellent grip. They can absorb sweat well, which helps to maintain traction. However, some people may be allergic to rubber, so it’s important to consider this if you have known allergies. For instance, if you have a latex allergy, a natural rubber mat might cause an allergic reaction.

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

PVC mats are widely available and relatively inexpensive. They are durable and can provide good grip. However, they are not as environmentally friendly as natural rubber mats. PVC mats may also have a strong odor, especially when new, which can be a concern for some yogis.

Cork

Cork is a sustainable material that has natural antimicrobial properties. It provides a unique texture that offers good grip as you sweat. Cork mats are also known for their durability. However, they may be a bit heavier than some other options and can be more expensive.

TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer)

TPE mats are becoming increasingly popular. They are non-toxic, recyclable, and offer decent grip. They are often lighter in weight compared to rubber mats, making them more convenient to carry to and from the yoga studio. TPE mats also tend to have a good balance between durability and flexibility.

Thickness

The thickness of a yoga mat matters in hot yoga. A thicker mat, usually around 6mm or more, can provide more cushioning for your joints. This is beneficial, especially if you have knee or wrist issues. However, a very thick mat may make it more difficult to maintain balance during standing poses. On the other hand, a thinner mat, around 3 – 4mm, offers less cushioning but allows for a more stable base. It is closer to the floor, which can help with balance and alignment. You need to consider your own comfort and the type of poses you usually practice to determine the ideal thickness. This will ensure that your entire body is supported during poses like Savasana (Corpse Pose) and Tadasana (Mountain Pose).

Width

The width of a yoga mat usually ranges from 24 – 26 inches. A wider mat gives you more space to spread out, which can be helpful if you have a broader frame or like to have extra room for your arms during poses. But a narrower mat may be more convenient if you have limited storage space or need to carry it around frequently.

Durability

A hot yoga mat needs to be durable as it is exposed to high temperatures and a lot of wear and tear. Mats made from high-quality materials like thick natural rubber or well-constructed TPE are likely to last longer. Look for mats that have reinforced edges to prevent fraying. Also, consider how well the mat can withstand repeated washing. Since you will be sweating a lot on the mat, it will need to be cleaned regularly. A mat that can maintain its integrity and grip after multiple washes is a better investment. For example, some mats may start to peel or lose their texture after a few washes, while others can endure frequent cleaning without any significant deterioration.

Portability and Storage

If you plan to take your yoga mat to the studio or travel with it, portability is an important factor. Lighter mats are easier to carry. Some mats come with carrying straps or can be rolled up tightly for convenient transportation. Mats that are made from materials like TPE are often lighter than rubber mats. When it comes to storage, consider the size of the mat and whether it can be easily stored in your home. If you have limited space, a thinner and more flexible mat may be a better option as it can be rolled up and tucked away in a small corner or closet.

Yoga mats for hot yoga come in a wide range of prices. Basic PVC mats can be relatively inexpensive, starting from around $20 – $30. These mats can be a good option for beginners who are not sure if they will stick with hot yoga. Mid-range mats, usually made from TPE or natural rubber, can cost between $50 – $100. They offer better quality in terms of grip, durability, and material. High-end mats, such as those made from cork or premium natural rubber, can cost over $100. These mats often have additional features like enhanced grip technology, extra-thick cushioning, or unique designs. It’s important to consider your budget and the value you expect from the mat when making a purchase.
